Timely Warning: Off-Campus Homicide

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act, the Department of Public Safety is informing the College of Charleston campus community of a homicide that took place in the immediate vicinity of campus. 

Date (of offense):   5/17/2026 

Time (of offense): 0234 hours 

Reported to: City of Charleston Police Department 

Location: Burns Lane between Meeting and King Sts. 

Suspect status: Two possible suspects in custody/detained; One suspect at large 

Suspect Description: At large suspect described as a Black male wearing grey sweatpants, a black hoodie and wearing a backpack. Unknown last location. 

Incident Description: On 17 May 2026, at approx. 0234hrs, Charleston City Police reported to a “shots fired” in the area of Burns Lane and King Street. Suspects were GOA, two possible suspects were later located in the area of Meeting / John and Mary / King.  

One suspect is still reported to be at large. B/M grey sweatpants, black hoodie and a backpack, no further information is known. DPS, NCPD and CCSO are currently on scene assisting in areas as needed. It is unknown what the last area the suspect was seen at. 

CPD reported 3 GSW victims in the area of Burns Lane when they arrived on scene and were transported to MUSC, one was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Victims do not appear to be CofC related, but not yet confirmed. Avoid this area.
