CAMPUS ADVISORY: Update on Tropical Storm Helene

By | September 24, 2024

Dear Campus Community,

College of Charleston officials are closely monitoring the forecast for Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast Thursday.

At this time, all class and work schedules remain unchanged. The College’s Emergency Management Team is in regular contact with local and state agencies and will update the campus community as the forecast becomes more certain.

Information about online learning related to any school delays/closures can be found on the College’s Emergency Management site.

According to the National Weather Service, the tropical storm is forecast to move generally northward across the Gulf of Mexico, then track inland across portions of Florida, Georgia, and possibly South Carolina later this week. Concern is increasing for impactful weather Thursday into Friday, with the potential for very strong winds, heavy rainfall and tornadoes. Additionally, coastal flooding, high surf and an enhanced risk for rip currents is possible along the coast.

Please stay tuned to local news and monitor the latest updates from the National Weather Service. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division maintains valuable hurricane information and resources on its website at hurricane.sc.

Sincerely,

College of Charleston Emergency Management Team
