The College of Charleston continues to closely monitor the development and track of Hurricane Dorian. Models from this morning continue to show a potential impact to South Carolina later in the week.
At present, the College remains on its normal operating schedule and all classes are being held as scheduled on Monday, September 2. However, this schedule may change as more information becomes available over the weekend, and the campus community will be notified immediately of any changes of schedule.
This Saturday afternoon (August 31, 2019), S.C. Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency. Please understand that this declaration is a critical procedural step so that state agencies can begin more formalized emergency preparations and mobilize state assets. NOTE: The College emergency management team and state officials are not declaring that an evacuation is necessary or required just yet.
In the meantime, please follow these steps:
For Faculty and Staff
Please review your departmental hurricane preparedness plans for the possibility of securing your office/work space early in the week. Also, please make sure you have a personal plan in place for you, your family and your pets. For tips on preparation and what should be in your emergency kit, visit https://www.ready.gov/.
For Students
Please review the Student Emergency Preparedness page at emergency.cofc.edu. It’s imperative that students complete an emergency evacuation plan form in MyCharleston. The link can be found on the academic services tab; then go to the Banner Self Service section; click on the student link and once all the options open up, there is a link to the Emergency Evacuation Plan. IMPORTANT NOTE: the College will provide all students an evacuation option if they do not wish to travel to a safe place on their own. If you haven’t already, please discuss your possible evacuation plans with family and friends.
The College’s emergency management team will provide an update on Sunday afternoon or sooner as the situation develops or as operational changes are required at the College. As always for adverse weather events, the College will comply with any closure orders issued by the S.C. Governor’s office or Charleston County government.
