At this time, the College plans to follow its normal operating and class schedule for Thursday, Nov. 10.
However, due to expected flooding and high winds from Tropical Storm Nicole, all students, faculty and staff should exercise caution traveling to and from campus on Thursday. If you cannot get to campus safely, you should stay home. Students should communicate directly with their professors, if they will not be able to get to campus safely. Employees should communicate directly with their supervisors regarding adjusted work hours, leave, and/or remote work options for Thursday.
Faculty wishing to take advantage of the Storm Day Makeups previously scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, November 12-13 (see https://registrar.cofc.edu/calendars/ac-2022fall.php), are certainly at liberty to do so.
Nicole is forecast to make landfall tonight on Florida’s east coast and recurve toward southwest Georgia and South Carolina, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight’s forecast for Charleston calls for sustained winds up to 30 mph and gusts up to 40-45 mph. Moderate flooding will coincide with a high tide at 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Thursday morning’s high tide at 8:47 a.m. could reach major flood stage of 8.4 feet. Total rainfall of 2-3 inches, and potentially up to 5 inches, is forecast. Flooding is expected in the usual areas around Charleston, including the medical district near Calhoun Street as well as around Fishburne Street, Hagood Avenue, etc.
The College will notify the campus community through the Cougar Alert emergency notification system if there are any changes to operations and class schedules for Thursday, Nov. 10.
