From Friday through Wednesday, the Charleston area will experience high temperatures, with heat indices between 109 and 116 degrees, peaking on Monday, according to National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston. Heat Advisories are likely and Extreme Heat Watches/Warnings are possible.
Sunday and Monday are forecasted for the highest heat indices of the period, according to NWS Charleston.
A Heat Index of 106°F indicates a very high risk of heat-related illnesses. It means that the air temperature and humidity combine to make the body feel as though it is 106 degrees Fahrenheit, potentially leading to heatstroke, heat cramps, or heat exhaustion with prolonged exposure or physical activity.
Health Risks:
At this level, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and heatstroke is possible with prolonged exposure or physical activity.
Precautions:
Individuals should take precautions like staying hydrated, seeking shade and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. If symptoms of heat illness develop, seek immediate medical attention. Please read additional tips for staying safe in the heat, including tips from a CofC professor. Frequent breaks and shelter in the shade or an air-conditioned environment are recommended for prevention of heat related illnesses. Staying hydrated is also important.
Please be aware and appreciative of staff members whose work require them to be outside.
