Campus Advisory – Major Tidal Flooding Expected

By | October 8, 2025

Dear Campus Community,

The National Weather Service has forecast the potential for major tidal flooding Thursday and Friday, particularly downtown. High tides on Thursday and Friday could reach 8 feet or more, which may make some roads impassable, damage property and pose hazards to pedestrians and motorists. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph are possible from Thursday night into Saturday.

HIGH TIDE SCHEDULE AND EXPECTED LEVELS

  • Thursday, Oct. 9: 10:06 a.m., 8.0 ft; 10:31 p.m., 7.6 ft
  • Friday, Oct. 10: 11:02 a.m., 8.5 ft; 11:28 p.m., 7.0 ft

Peak impacts on roadways are expected in the hours immediately before and after high tides on Thursday at 10:06 a.m. and Friday at 11:02 a.m.

Be aware of the following:

  • Do not drive or walk through flooded streets. Check the City of Charleston’s TideEye website for closed roads.
  • Expect road closures and flooding in low-lying areas.
  • Move vehicles from low-lying areas and away from storm drains.
  • Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.

Those who are new to Charleston, especially new students, should be aware that these so-called “King Tide” events occurring in Charleston this week can pose significant danger to life and property.

The average high tide in Charleston is about 5.5 feet, but during a King Tide event, the high tide can reach 7 feet or higher. King Tides occur when there is alignment of the gravitational pull between the sun and moon.

Many streets to the west of our campus are prone to coastal flooding. These streets include Lockwood Blvd., Wentworth St., Barre St., Ashley Ave., Gadsden St., Beaufain St., Hagood Ave. and others.

Use the City of Charleston’s TideEye website for important tidal and flooding information. Check the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Charleston for the latest weather advisories. Stay tuned to local news and weather stations for the latest updates.

Free City Parking Available:

The following City of Charleston parking garages will be open for City residents and College of Charleston students to park for free beginning Thursday at 7 a.m. through Friday at 4 p.m.:

  • Charleston Tech Center Garage (997 Morrison Drive)
  • 99 WestEdge Garage (99 WestEdge St.)

When exiting the garage, press the call button and tell the operator you are taking advantage of free storm parking. Avoid ground-level parking, as lower levels of some garages may take on water during peak tides.
