The College’s Emergency Management Team continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Nicole. Charleston and surrounding areas remain under a Tropical Storm Warning, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 36 hours.
At this time, the College remains on its normal operating schedule for Wednesday, Nov. 9. Residence Halls and all support services remain in full operation. Nicole is forecast to make landfall tonight on Florida’s east coast and recurve toward southwest Georgia and South Carolina, according to the National Weather Service.
Today’s forecast for Charleston calls for sustained winds of up to 25 mph and gusts to 35 mph and moderate flooding coinciding with a high tide at 8:30 p.m. Tonight, sustained winds up to 30 mph and gusts to 40-45 mph are projected.
Of concern is Thursday morning’s high tide at 8:47 a.m., which could reach major flood stage of 8.4 feet. Total rainfall of 2-3 inches, and potentially up to 5 inches, is forecast. The College will notify the campus community through the Cougar Alert emergency notification system if there are any changes to operations and class schedules for Thursday, Nov. 10.
Flooding is expected in the usual areas around Charleston, including the medical district near Calhoun Street.
