Dear Campus Community,
The College of Charleston’s Emergency Management Team continues to meet and closely monitor the forecast for Hurricane Ian. College officials are also in regular contact with city, county and state leaders regarding the storm’s expected impact on South Carolina. Charleston and surrounding counties are currently under a Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch.
A decision regarding College operations, classes, work schedules and events for Thursday and Friday will be communicated to students, faculty and staff on Wednesday. While an evacuation of campus is not anticipated, there are likely to be changes to academic instruction and work modes. Residence halls will remain open, and students will have access to on-campus dining/meal options.
In the meantime, everyone should be tending to their personal safety plans and making preparations for potential events such as power outages and flooding. Currently, the forecast for the Charleston area due to Hurricane Ian calls for significant rainfall, strong wind gusts and localized flooding, with impacts beginning as soon as late Wednesday and continuing into Saturday. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches inland and 6 to 10 inches along most of the South Carolina coast are likely. Flooding will likely be worsened by coinciding high tides on Thursday and Friday, and travel may be impacted by road and bridge closures.
