The College of Charleston Emergency Management Team is closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Isaias.
As of 5 p.m. Saturday, August 1, the National Hurricane Center had downgraded Isaias from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm. But the storm is expected to re-strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the east coast of Florida on Saturday night. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Charleston area.
While landfall in South Carolina is not predicted at this time, College officials are coordinating with Charleston County and City of Charleston emergency management teams regarding plans for possible impacts to the Charleston region. Tropical storm force winds, significant rainfall, coastal flooding and the potential for isolated tornadoes are expected for the Charleston area beginning Monday afternoon and into Monday night. Several inches of rain are predicted throughout the event, and tropical storm wind bands could continue into Tuesday morning.
At this time, the College plans to remain on its current operating schedule for Monday, August 3, with most campus employees continuing to work remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Essential employees should check with their supervisors regarding any adjustments to work schedules.
